How To Choose The Best Photograph For A Canvas Print

One way to help showcase a favorite photograph is to have a canvas print made out of it. A canvas portrait can easily be mounted on the wall and adds a unique, personal touch to any living space. When having a canvas portrait created, you'll need to turn in an original picture. Some photographs naturally work better than others. Here are three tips to consider when choosing a photo for a canvas print:

Go with a High Resolution

Since canvas portraits tend to be fairly large (most are least 8 x 10 inches), it's a good idea to choose a photograph with as high of a resolution as possible. Larger photographs tend to have better resolutions, but this isn't always the case. If a photo has been digitally enhanced or "blown up", the resolution may actually be lower than you think. The image should be 300 dpi (dots per inch) or higher. If the image is on a computer, you can find out its resolution by right-clicking on a PC and selecting "Properties." Images less than 300 dpi tend to not look very good when created on canvas.

If the photo was taken with a digital camera, make sure the picture was taken with a setting of 5 mega pixels or higher. Go with the best quality settings possible when taking digital photos.

Use a Flexible File Format

If you're going through a photo studio that develops using digital images, you'll need to make sure you have the right type of image available. Use the JPG file format for best results. Most photo studios prefer working with a JPG image. Your digital camera will most likely automatically save images in this format, but if you need to change the format of the image, most basic image editors can do this easily. When changing the format, double check to ensure that the resolution doesn't change upon saving the new file (or give the new file a different file name so you'll have both versions still).

Be Prepared for Slight Changes

When a photograph is printed on canvas, slight variations will appear due to the natural weave pattern in the canvas material. These variations may result in around a 5% difference. Most differences you will notice will be in the individual colors.

Remember the above tips when choosing a photograph to use for that perfect canvas masterpiece you've always wanted. Doing so will ensure that your finished artwork looks as gorgeous as it possibly can.
